Top 10 Indie Bands – No 5. Sonic Youth:
Sonic youth was one of the top indie bands in the 1980’s. They had a long career of around 30 years. Throughout their journey, they were forced to change their lineup many times. But in spite of that, they didn’t face any problems and just kept going. The album ‘ Daydream Nation’, is still considered as one of the best indie rock albums. The main reason behind their popularity was their unconventional music and alternate tunings. Even Kurt Cobain was inspired from them. I was devastated when I learned that the band broke up in 2011. However, they have left behind a vast array of songs, which are still heard everywhere. And even though the band is no more, all their members are still involved in music.
Top 10 Indie Bands – No 4. Joy Division:
They are one of the most iconic bands in the history of indie rock. Their depressing and dark melody is one a kind. Right after hearing their debut album, ‘ Unknown Pleasures’, I became a huge fan of them. Their most popular song, ‘ Love Will Tear Us Apart’, can bring tears to even the toughest of persons. However, the band had a rather unfortunate end . Ian Curtis, their main singer committed suicide just before heading out for their US tour. However, the other members met up after a year and started a new band under a new name.
Top 10 Indie Bands – No 3. Dinosaur Jr:
I also found the name of this band slightly weird. But later on found out that, they were originally called ‘ Dinosaur’, but because of legal issues were forced to change to ‘ Dinosaur Jr’. Their songs were more of the aggressive kind. The most iconic member of their band was J.Mascis, their lead guitarist. Some of the guitar solos he played was unbelievable. ‘ Bug’ was one of their most famous albums. They also released an album in 2009, called ‘ Farm’.
Top 10 Indie Bands – No 2. Neutral Milk Hotel:
The first thing which struck me about this band was its weird name. Unfortunately, they were not ready to disclose it and wanted to keep it private. The band was started by Jeff Mangum in the 1980’s. They are well known for their second album ” In The Aeroplane Over the Sea’. Their songs are a unique mixture of pop music and rock music, and some of the lyrics also had references to Jesus. I really liked the fact, that they had an accordion player in the band. Even though Jeff left the band later on, their songs are still an inspiration to all the present day top indie bands.
Top 10 Indie Bands – No 1. Pixies
Pixies are probably one of the most underrated bands in the history of music. They deserve way more recognition than they got. Their lyrics are very deep and their music is very unique and creative. In their lyrics, they often talked about several conspiracy theories. In 1989, they released an album, ‘ Doolittle’, which inspired plenty of rock bands. Even top bands like Nirvana were inspired from them. They decided to quit in 1993, because of some internal problems. However, they made a comeback in 2004 and performed all over the world. In 2014 as well, they released a new album, called ‘ Indie Cindy’.
