written as an ode to elvis in the fall of 1989 during my time on the monterey peninsula, the inspiration for this song traces its roots back to 1983 when i portra the role of the pharoah in an off-broadway production of joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat. i wanted to capture the duality of the king's amazing life in song, blending the driving country sounds that embodied a simpler life and time he grew up in with the religious fervor that erupted virtually overnight with the birth of elvis-mania in 1955. a phenomenon that has remarkably now lasted longer than the tragiy short life he lived. i didn't think much of the song when i originally penned it and didn't play it for anyone for the first 18 months. i was very surprised at the reception it received in dec 1990 and it quickly became a staple at all large music live performances throughout the 90's. it clearly was the best song recorded on the second large music al and we are thrilled to be able to give this song the new life its been waiting for, for the past two decades!
