the viola gets shortchanged by bach. unfortunate, but fact. although bach pla the viola himself and appreciated it, none of his pieces were for solo viola (although nice, the brandenburg concertos don't count). violist are forced to consort bach's cello suites and viola da gamba with piano sonatas to get their daily dues of bach. however, there are also the violin sonatas and paras, which violists seem to not want to touch even with a 50 meter pole. and for good reason: they're hard, to the point where even great violinists complain about the precarious balancing of technique and musicality, the former which violists lack and the latter which they have attained the anhesis of in abundance. with that in mind, here is what might be the first viola recording of the bach violin sonatas. i present to you bach's violin sonata 2, the fuga movement, which is a technical minefield. there are definitely mistakes and slipups everywhere, but i hope you still enjoy.
