it began, believe it or not, as a song about captain cook and his observations of the transit of venus! i got inspired after watching a doentary about how important the observation was to advancing science. if i remember correctly it was a cloudy day and they missed the transit, hence the original opening line was....
" james and i we failed to see, you transit the sun..."
