“aiken drum” is a por scottish folk song attributed to the jacobite rebellion and the battle of sheriffmuir (1715) in particular. the song is relatively recent in origin, the first version appearing in print in 1820 by james hogg in in his “jacobite reliques”...

“soldier soldier”:
fresnostate university gives the earliest date as 1903 in america. it was printed in "games and songs of american children" by william wells newell. however the song was collected many times over in a short period of time, including cecil sharp in 1917, anne gilchrist in scotland in 1919 and seamus ennis in ireland. wikipedia

as my original recording of “aiken drum” was quite short i've been thinking along the lines of doing an extended version. originally a major key song (g – c – d7) i decided to try it in a minor key instead (gm7 – c – d7). the inclusion of “soldier soldier” in-between verses 4 & 5 came about purely because i'd started humming the tune and thought it would fit. dw
