The Popravinas, Southern California – hitting their stride on their third album
The Popravinas - Southern California
After 10 years of slugging it out in the bars and halls of Southern California, The Popravinas are hitting their stride on their third album, Willy Nilly (2019, Zesty Smile Records).
New tricks aren’t necessary for these older dogs who continue to produce twangy, power-pop perfection with nine new offerings drawing welcomed comparisons and nods to The Replacements and early Wilco with a flourish of The Beach Boys to hold this complete package in a SoCal shrink-wrap almost as tight as the plentiful guitar hooks and vocal melodies contained within.
Bassist, lead singer and band songwriter, Eddy Sill, formed the outfit after a comet like tenure with the infamous LA party band, The Mutts, whose sales to talent ratio were shamefully off-kilter. Shifting the focus to a more rootsy, alt-country feel along with a fateful run-in with multi-instrumentalist and guitar ace John Adair at ‘the world’s smallest honky-tonk”, The Cinema Bar in Culver City, The Popravinas began recording and performing memorable, catchy and eventually acclaimed songs for the everyman and woman.
While remaining to hold court at their regular Westside hometown haunts, the band grew their popularity up and down the California Coast with intermittent runs to surrounding states. After their first album, Everybody’s Fault But Ours, gained favourable reviews and satellite airplay, the band was finding fans in Spain and Brazil, who unbeknownst to the band were among some of the countries that are very supportive and fond of theirs and others’ American alt-country and roots rock.
Our second album opened up a ton of doors for us,” recalls John, mentioning 2017’s highly reviewed California Sonic. “By then online radio shows and podcasts really blew up and they were playing the hell out of the record. We’re really looking forward to continuing that momentum with Willy Nilly.
The new album has already garnered some great praise from trusted outlets such as Powerpopaholic and Radio Free Americana and has been added to the playlists of dozens of shows and stations around the world, bolstered by its unlikely lead single, Sofia (CMU).

This semi-sentimental, jangly jem was originally commissioned as a reward to a past crowdfunding campaign. “We were trying to finance a small European tour. We didn’t meet our goal but one of the rewards was a custom Popravinas composition,” says John with a chuckle.
The contributor has a college age family member at Carnegie Mellon University. The rest can be left to songwriting interpretation and lore..
Parlaying that interpretation, the song has proven wildly successful on US college radio and areas ranging far and wide from Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Spain, and particularly the United Kingdom.
"It has really taken off in the UK, as there is a Central Manchester University," remarks John. “that was pleasantly unexpected!”
The band is looking forward to promoting the album live with stateside travel and shows on the books in CA, NY and PA with more markets and countries sure to follow.
Starting out with the piano: Three simple steps to success
Starting out with the piano: Three simple steps to success
While music genres ebb and flow in popularity as each decade rolls by, there is a curious anomaly that seems to endure, no matter what era it is in. The piano ballad seems to be impervious to fashion trends, societal norms, or world affairs. Whether it's love, a political statement, or simply for fun, the piano has accompanied pretty much every song type there is. And this trend doesn't seem to be going anywhere, anytime soon. With the likes of Adele and John Legend lighting up the charts with piano-based odes to family and lost love, it is no surprise to see people once again being drawn to the keys. From the top of the charts, to the unsigned indie artists on Soundcloud, the piano is currently everywhere in contemporary music.
This is all well and good if you happen to be a classically trained pianist with friends in the music industry, but for those of us who are looking for a ‘foot in the door’ of the music scene, but lack the skills or contacts; there are some options out there that can help you learn the basics, get your sound noticed, and concentrate on the fun and artistic side of making music.
Compose
Let’s start with the basics. The first port of call when writing music is to learn how to create it. It may sound odd to think of people who can’t play an instrument trying to write songs, but it is actually far more common than we realise. Many great singers are credited as songwriters, without having any knowledge of how to play an instrument at all, but for most of us, if we lack a musician friend to help out, this lack of knowledge can become a roadblock. This is where you are going to have to learn the basics yourself. This is actually a much better approach to music anyway, as even a basic knowledge of chords will put you in a strong position to create more music in the future. A perfect way to learn these chords is through an online piano chords generator.
These sorts of services allow you to select a chord, and see what keys that chord is comprised of. It will also show you how the chord can be written and how it sounds. Playing along with these sorts of online piano tutors are fast becoming the easiest way to learn a new instrument, and with a years subscription for some of these services being around the same price as one or two private tutorials, it is also the cheapest way to learn.
Create
Once you start writing music, the next step is to get it recorded. You can of course, pay thousands to get your song recorded professionally, but for the majority of us, we don’t want to be laying down a small fortune on the first few tunes we create. Luckily in today’s world there are plenty of options available to record music from home at a level that is almost indecipherable from the professionals. Free apps such as Audacity, or Apple’s Garageband give you the control you need to perfect the sound you are trying to produce, and serve as great introductions to music production. Some professional artists have never moved beyond the likes of Audacity, so bare in mind that these free tools are more than capable of creating the framework for your masterpiece.
Release
The last thing you need to do, is get your music heard. Again, thank your lucky stars that you were born in the internet age, as tomorrow's stars are getting discovered through the likes of Youtube as much as they are through the hard, ‘bar-circuits’ that upcoming rock stars of yesteryear were forced to frequent. A good following on social media, and a substantial catalogue readily available to stream, and you already have half the battle won. While having a Twitter and Facebook account are par for the course, it is also a good idea to look at the likes of Soundcloud or Bandcamp. These are two services that do all the heavy lifting when it comes to hosting a streaming music. They also have some great social elements (some even refer to Soundcloud as a social media platform at heart), which allows for organic growth in your brand. If someone likes your songs on Soundcloud, it is insanely easy for them to share your song within the app, or if they prefer, on other social networks. This has now become the new “word of mouth” advertising the last generation were so reliant on.
So with such amazing tools at your disposal, there really isn’t a better time to be making music. The hardest part is often starting a project, so if you are serious about creating music for a living, stop putting it off and start writing those tunes! With all this help at your disposal, do you really have any excuses not to?

Although Natalia Damini's own person style ranges from dance to pop and R&B, her musical taste is not limited to such genres: it is expansive and extends to legends such as Michael Jackson. She is quoted in an interview, on her official YouTube channel, as being inspired by Michael Jackson "since she was 10 [years old]". The influence of MJ has clearly inspired her outfit choices both on and off stage; rocking strong, unique and quirky outfits that pay homage to MJ, like the bold military red jacket Damini wore while performing at Jubillee Festival in 2017.

In Damini's song 'Give Me The Night' you can both hear and see another of her inspirations shining through with her breathy vocals and use of videography. Similar to Mariah Carey's 'We Belong Together', the music video for Damini's 'Give Me The Night' opens with Damini lying in bed looking as equally radiant as Mariah; the camera shots in both music videos reflect the lyrics well. Damini should continue to build on this, as a strong link between her songs and the music videos will allow her to boost her image and create a successful presence on a variety of media platforms.
Natalia Damini Extends Fanbase Across the World
Over the past few years, Damini has continued to extend her fanbase across the world touring and performing in countries like Germany, France and Canada. Damini's energy onstage creates a unique night and really connects with the audience with her passion for dancing. As well as Damini's talent for dance, her vocal range is also highly versatile and this has allowed her to work with numerous famous musicians; such as, the Shop Boyz, Nicki Minaj in her song 'Hot Fire' and Gucci Mane. Each of these artists appeared on her album 'Beautiful', released in 2014.
New Album Release - I am Natalia Damini
Natalie Damini has just released her new album, self-titled 'I am Natalia Damini'. The album contains a variety of tracks that continue to illustrate her growing talent. Notable mentions you will want to play on repeat are 'On The Floor' and 'Crazy' feat. 2 Chainz. Yet again, Damini demonstrates her expanding popularity, teaming up with Lil Wayne on the track 'Can’t Stop Me', which also features Rezzo.
Both existing fans and new fans have a lot to look forward to with Natalia Damini: with her energy on stage, powerful voice and strong lyrics, which she has built her success on so far. All of these elements combined should allow Damini to further advance in America and make her way into the UK scene – just like her inspirations, Prince, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears and of course MJ successfully achieved.
