I had written a poem after we lost our beloved Labrador Nero to cancer to celebrate his life and how we thought of him not as a pet but as a friend. The le was never in doubt. We considered our Labrador to be more than a pet but “My Loyal Old Friend”.
Two years later I decided to put the poem to music. I wanted to give the song a universal appeal to anyone who had lost a pet whether it was a dog, a cat, a rabbit, or any other pet. The important part was to have everyone who listened to the song share their thoughts and memories of a beloved pet. The song/poem embraces the sad memories of losing a pet but also the happy memories of the time someone’s pet was with them.
I didn’t deliberately set out to make people cry but I knew the lyrics would, and they have on a number of occasions. Don’t ever be ashamed or afraid to cry.
The Lyrics to the saddest most Heartbreaking Song ever about losing a pet
VERSE 1
If I had given you another name what would it have been?
Looking back on your life what would that name mean?
Something that says everything I treasured and still do,
A name that tells everyone how special you were too.
VERSE 2
Someone who was always happy to be by my side,
Who never questioned me and would never hide,
You were always there for me right up to the end,
I am so proud to have known you my loyal old friend.
VERSE 3
When I felt my world was empty and I only wanted to cry,
When I was feeling low or troubled by my side you'd lie,
That tender look in your eyes encouraged me to carry on,
My old friend I miss you so much now that you are gone.
VERSE 4
Memories of our time together are precious now to me,
Those pictures will never fade so clear for all to see,
For I will always find the time to remember you,
My old friend I know you will remember me too.
VERSE 5
If only I could see you again I wish there was a way,
To have you by my side for just one more precious day,
My faithful partner for now my love, is all that I can send,
Until we are together again my loyal old friend.
