it’s nowhere near daylight when i wake in the morn
then i put on a sweater to keep myself warm
and i turn on the forecast to see what the weatherman says
and decide if i’ll go on the water today

the winds from the northeast, at least so he says
and he’s saying a gale is what’s on the way
i’ll go out to the wharf just to see what the men say
but i’m not going out on the water today

the old boat’s just bobbin’ out there on the bay
and right at the moment there’s never a wave
but the clouds in the sky, they move quickly away
so i’m not goin’ out on the water today

i’ve worked on the water for most of my days
i know the sea well, i know how it behaves
and what i owe to the bank i will never repay
but i’m not going out on the water today
