you can focus on the thorns
and be filled with such great fright
that you fail to see the rose
and miss out on its delights
things are seldom as they seem
and senses sometimes don’t sense right
if thorns can mask a rose
then maybe day can come from night

set your hopes sky high
but your expectations low
and leave plenty of room
for a garden that might grow
roses red and violets blue
among the weeds may soon show
but if you never plant a seed
you’ll never get to know
