while researching the lyrics for this tune i discovered numerous versions (including an italian one where aiken drum's hair is made of spaghetti) + some additional verses from the original that i'd never heard before. as the “epic extended version” was already running at well over 7 minutes i left a couple of verses out. i then thought i should probably “do the song justice” by leaving out the “soldier soldier” section and instead putting in the verses that i'd missed. these included his wescut (waistcoat) being made of crusts of pies and his breeches being made of haggis bags(?) the former was easy enough to sing but i had a real struggle singing the latter for some reason (kept stumbling over “haggis bags”) so instead plumped for a repeat of the 1st verse. dw
