The wife flees and boards on a trolley heading to the city. He manages to catch it too and tries to reconnect to her. But she is crying and unwilling to talk to him again. The overwhelmingly sad and sorrowful music is based on the 18th century italian folk song “casca l'uliva”.

The man kneels by the wife's bed as she slowly opens her eyes. They kiss, while the woman from the city's carriage rolls down the hill, and the film dissolves to the sunrise. The song of two humans is reprised, developing into a fulfilling and alleviating finale.
